‘Guy Richie’s The Covenant’ An Example of Self-Sacrifice

THE COVENANT, directed by Guy Ritchie, a Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film. / Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures

Since the 9/11 bombings of the World Trade Center the United States Military occupied Afghanistan trying to recover the individuals involved with the devastation on the American soil. During those twenty years our soldiers relied on interpreters to help us communicate with the local Afghan citizens. One of the important jobs was to try and locate where the Taliban created improvised explosive devices (IED’s) or when they were in the process of using them against our troops. When one was discovered the Armed Forces Division (AFD) was deployed to destroy or defuse the weapons of mass destruction.

In an attempt to prevent sneak attacks and suicide bombings the United States government put together a military task team to prevent these sort of actions by trying to identify these types of attempts before they happen. This included trying to discover where the Taliban was storing and creating these IED’s. Leading one of these teams to seek these IED’s was Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal ), and after a failed situation where they lost their last interpreter he needed to interview for another to replace him. This is where John met Ahmed (Dar Salim) a Afghan interpreter who is from a family that has regularly dealt with the Taliban for business trade to survive.

When the team discovers a location where the Taliban are creating these explosives they are attacked under fire and forced to escape and travel across an unfamiliar and unfriendly territory. This is where the adventure begins and a true source of heroism is displayed. A deep story that shows how two men can do anything to save one another during dangerous and trying times no matter the cost. Also where one Afghan interpreter goes through super human conditions to save an American soldier and then in return John repays the favor to help rescue Dar and escape from his war stricken home.

Director and writer Guy Ritchie does a spectacular job presenting what these characters had to go through to survive these treacherous situations. He developed excellent scenarios to express what these men had to endure to save themselves from many untold perils. Ritchie goes even further to express the emotions that help develop the pride these men showed to save another human being at risk of their own lives. There are many realistic scenes that help build the story into an exploration of pride and selfless acts of bravery.

This fantastic action undertaking brings out the valor that men can express to help one another find their way to safety.  The details of this journey helps bring the emotion in this story along with the realistic special effects that make you feel you are with them at every step.

Final Comment: I based my grade on special performance by the cast and a marvelous storyline that presents this type of human selflessness.
