‘Gladiator II’ Worth the Wait for True Fans

Twenty-four years after the first film the sequel appears with a vengeance. Continuing where it all left off, the story shifts to what happened to the boy after the death of Maximus (Russel Crowe) and the kingdom is now left without a leader. His heroic events, portrayed by the ultimate gladiator, freed the senate to try and bring the country back into some sort of democratic society. But, during difficult times this can be complicated, and survival is usually where everything seems to turn to.

When the control of the senate fails, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) must try and save her son young Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark), by having him flee from the kingdom to somewhere safe with someone she trusted. After years have passed Lucius “Hanno” Verus (Paul Mescal) returns once being defeated in battle and captured to fight in the arena as a gladiator. When purchased by Macrinus (Denzel Washington), Lucius is forced to train to fight in the Colossian in front of the new rulers who are brothers, Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger).

During this outstanding journey of treachery, violence, and all out brutal warfare came a tale that truly exposes revenge and victory to the unlikely. Finding heroes in an era driven by the rich and even controlled by their emperors and kings, becomes very difficult, but some appear from the mist of history. Now Lucius must try and locate his allies, even though they may be hard to find, like Viggo (Lior Raz), who trains him for the battles, and Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal), general of the armies and friend of his mothers. When help is needed the most, he does find one friend, with Ravi (Alexander Karim), a former slave who earned his freedom, but is now a doctor to the wounded.

When attempting to recreate a universe from a film classic that was a hit over twenty years ago can be very difficult, but director Ridley Scott successfully brought this world back to life with an amazing accomplishment. Developing fantastic fighting confrontations that reconstruct the style of warfare experienced during that era, for these warriors who are trying to defend their lives in an attempt to possibly gain freedom, was marvelously presented by Scott. These realistic stunts performed brought the viewer into this adventure giving you an amazing experience. During the battle scenes in the Roman Colosseum the special effects were presented flawlessly, especially when they displayed the shark attacks during the ship combat encounters. Ridley was able to effectively construct an excellent storyline that tied in the previous narrative. Finally, the performance from the cast was wonderfully accomplished and guided the audience through a journey that enriches the legend that is Gladiator.

This marvelous fight for truth and to right the wrongs, goes on a spiral turn that eventually comes to an exciting conclusion. A true fan of the original will definitely find this installment worth watching on the silver screen and will appreciate finding the best quality showing available.

Final Comment: I based my grade on the fantastic special effects. the brilliant combat scenes, and the entertaining theme.
