‘Dog Man’ The Origin of a Hero

The book comes alive with this animated feature that brings the true origin of Dog Man to the silver screen. Originally based on the children’s graphic novel series, created by Dav Pilkey, this quest gives everyone a true look at how this hero came to life. This narrative has everything and delivers an action adventure that includes some comical renditions with lots of crime, fantasy and most of all theoretic science fiction that develops only in cartoons and eventually brings it all back for lots of family fun.

Revealing the true beginning of how Officer Knight (voice of Peter Hastings) and his dog Greg (voice of Peter Hastings) became Dog Man (voice of Peter Hastings), a hybrid between K-9 and policeman, presents itself as unrealistically interesting. Simply, for this character, life went from fun and exciting to lonely and only needed when a crime fighter is needed. This new protagonist has his archrival villain to attend to, a feline that proclaims himself the ‘world’s most-evilest cat’ and goes by the name of Petey (voice of Pete Davidson). Their escapades have them dealing with many hazardous situations that keep Dog Man on his toes and always ready to stop Petey’s dastardly deeds.

Constantly in the news, Dog Man encounters his news reporter friend Sarah (voice of Isla Fisher) and her cameraman Seamus (voice of Billy Boyd) often, almost too much. She always seems to track down his many fantastic accomplishments, as well as, his many mistakes, that always finds a way to alarm his short-tempered boss, Chief (voice of Lil Rel Howery). Always on some sort of undertaking, Dog Man tries to avoid any publicity from the news and instruction from his superior to keep his own sense of peace. However, his nemesis never lets him rest as he keeps finding new hazards for Dog Man to juggle.

When Petey finds a way to clone himself he unexpectedly creates a younger kindhearted version of himself that he calls Li’l Petey (voice of Lucas Hopkins). With his new sidekick Petey wants to begin to take over the city but finds himself having to teach and explain everything to his newfound friend. With repetitively having to deal with his assistant, Butler (voice of Poppy Liu) that consistently refuses to actually help, and he is also avoiding his narcissist father (voice of Stephen Root), Petey already has his hands full. When they accidentally dispose of their pet fish, Flippy (voice of Ricky Gervais), things begin to turn bad for them.

Director and writer Peter Hastings does a wonderful job bringing this graphic novel to the big screen, for all the children that loved these books can now see their star in lights. Hasting not only uses his voice of some of the characters but also wrote and directed this popular personality for all to admire. Staying true to the original book, Peter developed a visual world that now will give their fans an excellent rendition of this storyline. Along with outstanding performances by the cast this feature length cartoon will appeal to any of the younger crowds that followed these stories growing up.

This fun loving adventurous animated tale brings you on a rollercoaster ride that doesn’t stop till your seat comes back into its original upright position. Bring the kids and allow them to have a good time laughing and enjoy their library superhero for them to see up close.

Final Comment: I based my grade on the exceptional graphical animation and the accuracy of characters origin.
